HOW TO GET VERIFIED ON INSTAGRAM
Aside from the latest cafe opening, Aussies are rarely first in line for anything. Waiting six months for global trends to filter Down Under has taught us to be patient, but it also means that when we get first dibs on a shiny new thing, we get pretty excited – like applying for Instagram verification.
Yes, that’s right. As of August 28, Australians were the first IG users in the world able to request the holy grail of online credibility: the blue tick.
Making the verification badge accessible to the masses isn’t just Instagram extending an olive branch; allowing people to apply for verification and further understand the process behind it eliminates previous rumours about needing deep pockets for blue badges, or the tick being reserved for those who have a contact at Instagram.
According to strategic manager APAC Nicci Meek, “The community asked us for more transparency around this issue… we’re sharing clear details about verification requirements and eligibility criteria.”
Previously only awarded to celebrities, musicians, politicians, selected brands and top ‘influencers’ to avoid impersonator accounts, verification requests are now accessible by any user. But applying for the ultimate social media status symbol is the easy part. To be verified, users must qualify for a series of criteria: notability, authenticity, uniqueness and completeness. If you think you’ve got that all down, here are the steps to applying:
Tap the three horizontal lines in the top right-hand corner of your profile, and click ‘Settings’ at the bottom. Scroll down and tap ‘Request Verification’. Once you’re in, enter your Instagram username followed by your full name underneath (for businesses, best to include any ‘Pty Ltd’ that’s officially part of your registered title).
As the final step, you’ll need to upload a photo of a government-issued ID, including – but not limited to – driver licences, passports or permits. Businesses and brands, you’ll need to take that certificate off the wall in order to upload a scan of an official business document, otherwise utility bills or tax files will do. Whatever you share during this process will be kept private.
Hit the ‘Send’ button, cross your fingers and wait. Approval for verifications can take anywhere from days to a few weeks, and even then there’s no guarantee you’ll land that coveted blue tick. Keep an eye on your notifications tab – once your request has been reviewed, you will receive a notification either confirming or denying your verification request.
Don’t worry too much if you miss out – you can reapply after 30 days. To increase your chances, make sure you’re abiding by the community guidelines and reaching a decent number of people through your account. Otherwise, dig out your licence and get applying for the social media equivalent of street cred.
